This is an interesting article on the implementation of the Nintendo WiiMote using Max/MSP and playing the Cycling74 synth engine MODE Cycling '74 || My Wii Life.... There is a useful discussion of the accuracy of the Wii sensors and the mappign strategies selected.

The Hothand is a new musical FX controller that uses a light-weight motion sensor to convert hand or body motion into FX. Looks like a fairly simple device that you could hack up with a 3D accelerometer and a wireless iCube, but hey - more info here

AudioMidi saw it at NAMM and said
"Guitarists -Wave Your Hands In The Air
It's great to see all this new technology bringing guitars into the world of tools that traditionally have been found in keyboards and and other electronic devices and controllers. One very cool guitar stomp box I saw at NAMM was from Source Audio and it is called HotHand. Hot Hand looks and works like a standard stomp box with effects like wah, filter, and modulation -the cool thing is that the rate or variation of the effect is controlled by the gestural movement of your hand. According to Source Audio here is how the device works, "The sensor is actually an accelerometer that senses motion and 'tilt' (the angle of the sensor relative to the earth)". "It will work anywhere, even on your head". It was a completely different experience to create volume swells or wah effects by moving my picking hand while playing guitar. It's kinda like having a Theremin for your guitar.Of course, the really good thing is that you can connect other effects or signals from keyboards and such and use the HotHand to give you new sounds and a new type of control."
