SPEAR FFT Software

March 27th, 2007 by Garth

screen0.jpg

SPEAR is an application for audio analysis, editing and synthesis developed by Michael Klingbeil. The analysis procedure (which is based on the traditional McAulay-Quatieri technique) attempts to represent a sound with many individual sinusoidal tracks (partials), each corresponding to a single sinusoidal wave with time varying frequency and amplitude.

Something which closely resembles the original input sound (a resynthesis) can be generated by computing and adding all of the individual time varying sinusoidal waves together. In almost all cases the resynthesis will not be exactly identical to the original sound (although it is possible to get very close).

Aside from offering a very detailed analysis of the time varying frequency content of a sound, a sinusoidal model offers a great deal of flexibility for editing and manipulation. SPEAR supports flexible selection and immediate manipulation of analysis data, cut and paste, and unlimited undo/redo. Hundreds of simultaneous partials can be synthesized in real-time and documents may contain thousands of individual partials dispersed in time. SPEAR also supports a variety of standard file formats for the import and export of analysis data.

Spear is not as flexible as AudioSculpt, but it does not require an IRCAM Forum membership sized payment either :-)

SpaceNavigator – 3Dconnexion

March 27th, 2007 by Garth

PZM.jpg

The 3Dconnexion's SpaceNavigator provides 6DoF navigation through a virtual space - Imagine using this to navigate through Timbre space in a musical performance - a bit like using a Wacom Tablet, such as the Intuos3 but this would not be non-linear in the way the tablet can be.

3dconnexion say

"Pressure sensing technology allows the controller cap to become a virtual extension of you. Push, pull, twist or tilt the cap a fraction of inch to simultaneously pan, zoom and rotate 3D imagery. Increase pressure to go fast or decrease pressure to make intricate adjustments"

There is also a Max external object from developed by Masayuki Akamatsu - part of his aka collection aka.spacenavigator where you will also find objects for the Wii remote and for the 3D accelerometer in Apples MacBook Pro laptops.

Apple – iPhone – High Technology – Sensors

March 26th, 2007 by Garth

The upcoming Apple iPhone has some cool accelerometers build right in - what can we do with these things to make musical instruments?? As it runs OSX, I assume we may be able to port Max/MSP/Jitter apps right onto the phone - that would be cool as it also has bluetooth and wireless connectivity..... can't wait....
