Hey again!
Thanks for your reply. Yes, I I´ve come to the same conclusion regarding the preamps. I just purchased a second hand Apogee Mini-me with ADC, and it was a great stepup from the R-44, specially the spatialisation and tonality. When I get the money, I´ll do the same upgrade to the SD-series.
Best

Hi Anders,

Yes I ended up moving to a sound devices 788T as in reality whilst making ambient sound recordings you need the best microphone preamps you can get, otherwise it is just not worth getting out of bed that early. I find the SPS200 and the sound devices 788 quite good, although the SPS200 produces considerably more noise output than my Schoeps MS pair they would argue this is because there are 4 capsules, but in reality each channel has more noise than I would prefer. Cheers, Garth

Hello!
I know this is an ancient post. If you´re still into this work, I´d be interested to know your experiences with the RME vs the Edirol. I have the Edirol8un-modded), recording with some Shure KSM141, and found the pres to be outrageously noise for quiet recordings. Was the RME up for the task, or have you moved to some even better equip?

Best
