CURATORS NOTE

Sonic Residues 02 is a unique opportunity to experience some of the best sound art in the world. Gathering together concert and installation works from across the globe (England, France, Germany, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, North Korea, Greece etc) the event is designed to encourage a wider public interest in electroacoustic music and sound art.

Sonic Residues 02 consists of two major components, a series of concerts and sound installation works (which evolve across the festival period).

Sonic Residues 02 takes the form of seven concerts, presented in an informal environment that will totally immerse the listener in the sound world, allowing the mind to create a rich and surprising journey.

Electroacoustic music is a viscous, fluid and engaging medium. A form that promotes sound as an exhibitable object. The sound is the point of engagement. Sweeping gestures, evolving textures and surprising interventions are just some of the subtle ways this music will seduce and captivate you.

Involving over 60 (local and international) composers and sound artists, this special event promises a veritable audio feast of the finest

The Installation program includes works by those who are relatively new to the field, through to those who are well established, internationally recognised artists. The cross-pollination of these differing levels of experience encourages a dialogue about approaches, perceptions, aesthetics and techniques, while strengthening the sound communities acknowledgment of the value of those who have committed so much to the field, and addressing the current aesthetic, and developments in practice. One of the developments featured in the works of Kin Cascone (USA) and Andie Gracie (UK) is the use of the Internet to stream sound and data from distant lands. Andie Gracie's work 'Positron Array' streams both audio and MIDI data generated by sensors mapping the celestial movements in the Northern Hemisphere. Music of the planets. The MIDI stream sent as part of this installation will allow others to compose and improvise additional layers. A redirection of this MIDI stream provides the opportunity for others to use this data to compose in their own studios. Some of the work resulting from this possibility may be presented on the closing concert of Sonic Residues 02.

Sonic Residues 02 also features forums outlining techniques in sound spatialisation, and fostering a healthy debate about the possible divisions between 'academic' and 'fringe or popular' electronic music styles. What are the similarities? How does history fashion developments? How can the differing practices enrich and support each other? Come and find out.

The installations program also changes in the second week, illustrating a different face of this diverse genre.

Come to the concerts, explore the installations, hear the luminaries discuss some of the burning issues of electronic music, and generally immerse yourself in a word that is exciting and vital. Please take this unique opportunity to have some aural fun J

Without the generous support of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, the City of Melbourne, and System Sound, this festival would not have been possible.

I am especially grateful for the support from System Sound that has facilitated the exploration of complex sound spatialisation programming through the use of the Richmond Audiobox, and their supplying of the Tannoy loudspeakers that make listening to this genre so much more rewarding.

I am also indebted to Ian Stevenson who has done a great deal of work to ensure that this festival is a full and enjoyable one. His curatorial support has ensured the diverse, and extensive offerings you see ahead of you.

ENJOY………….

My special thanks go to Ian Stevenson who co-curated the concert program and performed all the dispersions and many of the other technical organisational tasks. Without his help this festival would not have eventuated.
